Anti-Spyware Programs
Spyware, in simple terms, is software that transmits personal information from your computer to the internet without your permission or knowledge. When you surf the internet or install programs, sometimes add-on programs get installed without your knowledge. These add-on programs may be separate programs or additions to your Internet Browser program like Microsoft Internet Explorer. A subset to Spyware are Internet Cookies. Cookies are tracking files integrated in your Internet Browser program that can track your preferences, history, or other personal information. Another subset of Spyware are Adware programs. Adware are separate programs usually installed when you install free software. Free software sometimes "pop-up" advertisements or show "banner" advertisements in various programs you use which help pay for the development of the free software you use. These advertisements can be annoying.
Spyware can be harmless or harmful. Not only storing and transmitting your personal information, but also slowing down your computer and changing settings such as your Internet Start Page. Even worse, there is the legitimate threat that malicious programs could harm your computer data. There are no adequate laws to protect you. If you surf the Internet, you will most likely have Spyware on your computer. Protecting yourself from dissemination of your personal information without your knowledge is a security step all computer users should seriously consider.
There are many commercially available products which block and eliminate Spyware. Symantec and Network Associates are two such examples. There are many free programs that eliminate Spyware. They can be found at Tucows. Two examples are Ad-aware and Spybot - Search And Destroy. I have been using Spybot for a while now with good results. In any of the programs you choose, you must be careful. Sometimes they are too aggressive and turn off desirable programs. Any good Anti-Spyware program will have the ability to Undo any changes to your computer they have made.
