GIGO - Garbage In Garbage Out
This often used phrase is very important when considering an IT strategy.
The most advanced IT system in the world is useless unless it is fed good data and in the correct manner. Training of the data providers becomes critical. Simplistically, having an untrained file clerk input data into a complex system they don't understand will most certainly not produce useful results. This is an extreme example, but even subtle, less obvious situations can result in problems. The important point to note is that people using the system have to be adequately trained and properly supervised. Training can be costly and should be factored in the IT budget. As well, all the training in the world is useless unless there is proper ongoing supervision. People naturally get lazy over time and mistakes in proper IT procedures can creep in a typical work day. Without supervision, these mistakes will go unnoticed.
