Alberta Employment Standards

The Alberta Human Resources and Employment Department administers the Employment Standards Code, along with related regulations. The Code sets out requirements for minimum wage, overtime, hours of rest, vacation pay, general (statutory) holiday pay, notice of termination, maternity and parental leave, and termination matters.  Most employers in Alberta are subject to this Code.  However there is a mechanism that would allow an employer to apply for a permit of legislative relief if the employment circumstances are such that they do not fit the legislation. Application does not necessarily mean the permit would be automatically granted though.

If your small business is going to employ at least one person, other than yourself, it is recommended that you contact the nearest Client Services office or review the website to obtain a package of relevant information.
